Amateur Handler:  An Amateur is a person who, during the period of two years preceding the trial has not accepted remuneration in any form for the training of a hunting dog or the handling of a dog in a field trial.  For the purposes of this definition the word remuneration means payment in money, goods, or services.

Professional Handler:  A Professional Hander is a person who accepts remuneration in any form for the training of a hunting dog or the handling of a dog in a field trial.  For the purposes of this definition the word remuneration means payment in money, goods, or services.

AFC (Amateur Field Champion): At present, a dog will be recorded an Amateur Field Champion after having won 10 points under the point rating schedule in regular Amateur Stakes in at least 3 licensed or member field trials, provided that no more than 2 points each have been won by placing first in Amateur Walking Puppy and Amateur Walking Derby stakes and that it has been awarded 2 First placements, one of which must be a first placement in a 3 point or better Amateur All-Age, Amateur Gun Dog, Amateur Limited All-Age, or Amateur Limited Gun Dog Stake EXCEPT THAT a Brittany shall not be recorded an Amateur Field Champion UNLESS it has on a 3 point or better Amateur All-Age, Amateur Gun Dog, Amateur Limited All-Age, or Amateur Limited Gun Dog Stake in a licensed or member field trail held by a Brittany Club.

FC (Field Champion):  At present, a dog will be recorded a Field Champion after having won 10 points under the point rating schedule in regular stakes in at least three licensed or member field trials, provided that 3 points have been won in one 3 point or better Open All-Age, Open Gun Dog, Open Limited All-Age, or Open Limited Gun Dog Stake, that no more than 2 points each have been won in Open or Amateur Puppy and Open or Amateur Derby Stakes, and that no more than 4 of the 10 points have been won by placing first in Amateur Stakes EXCEPT THAT a Brittany shall not be recorded Field Champion unless it has won a 3 point or better Open Gun Dog, Open All-Age, Open Limited Gun Dog, or Open Limited All-Age stake in a licensed or member field trial held by a Brittany Club.

CH (Champion): Dogs with CH beside their name are conformational show champions.

DC (Dual Champion): Dogs with DC beside their name are both conformational show champions and field champions.

National Championship Qualified: In order to qualify for the National Championship in either Open Gun Dog, Open All-Age, Amateur Gun Dog, or Amateur All-Age, a dog MUST place 1st in a Brittany Club stake or place 2nd in a Brittany Club Stake that has 25 or more starters.  Dogs who placed in the previous year National Championship are automatically qualified to run in the National Championship the current year in the Stake of which they received placement.  Dogs who have previously won a National Championship stake are automatically qualified to run in the stake in which they won for the remaining life-span of the dog.

NAFC (National Amateur Field Champion):  The winner of the National Amateur All-Age Stake.

NFC (National Field Champion):  The winner of the National Open All-Age Stake

NAGDC (National Amateur Gun Dog Champion):  The winner of the National Amateur Gun Dog Championship

NGDC (National Gun Dog Champion):  The winner of the National Open Gun Dog Championship

HOF (Hall of Fame Inductee):  To be eligible for the Hall of Fame, the dog must be deceased.  Nominees should be animals that knowledgeable breeders would look for in pedigrees when establishing or improving breeding programs.   Hall of Fame Inductees should epitomize the dual ideal and during their lifetimes have achieved National recognition from Brittany fanciers for their show and trial (field and obedience) ability through successful competition on a multi-regional or National level, and/or that produced a high average of progeny from different dams or sires who were generally acknowledged as being of extra merit.

Backing/Honoring:  When a dog stops immediately or within a few steps, usually in a pointing stance, upon observing another dog or brace-mate on point

Brace: A pair of 2 dogs under competition at a field trial event

Cast: The direction and range demonstrated by a dog while seeking game

Course: The designated route on which the dogs will perform at a Field Trial event

Course Objectives: Variations in the terrain and/or vegetative cover which could hold game

Cover: The vegetation on course

Gallery: Observers of a Field Trial

Game: Upland birds (quail, pheasant, etc)

Hacking: Verbal intimidation of a dog

Line Running: Running in a straight away manner without quartering or seeking objectives

Pointing: When a dog indicates the presence and position of game by standing immobile and directing its muzzle toward the game

Pointing Intensity: When a dog indicates the presence and position of game by standing immobile and directing its muzzle toward game with exceptional concentration, power, or force

Pointing Style: The degree of intensity, loftiness or elegance a dog demonstrates while pointing

Quartering: To laterally traverse (back and forth) an area of ground while advancing forward

Range/Run: The distance at which a dog works from the handler

Running Style: the manner in which a dog traverses a course, including speed and efficiency in movement

Scout: A person, generally mounted on horseback, dispatched by a handler of a competing dog, with the approval of a judge, to seek out and report the presence and behavior of a dog under judgment.

Severely Penalize: To impose a punishment or handicap upon a dog for a breach of manners or some other serious fault.  Generally, a dog that has been severely penalized once during judgment should not receive championship points.  A dog that has been severely penalized more than once should not receive a placement.

Stake: A competitive category in a field trial.

Steady to Shot: Maintaining a point during the flight of, and the shot(s) for a flushed bird

Steady to Wing: Maintaining a point during the flight of a flushed bird
